Kentucky Poverty Law Center - Taking on poverty through advocacy, education, and research.
The Community Education Department

The Community Education Department will go into the trenches to conduct programs about legal rights and responsibilities, financial literacy, health and wellness, access to health care, and other related topics.  The department will develop its programs by working with our other departments and also with community stakeholders to identify issues that continue to affect individuals and families in our community.  The overarching goal of the department is to empower our neighbors with the skills and resources that they need to meet and sustain their most basic needs.

How Programs are Developed
The Community Education Department will develop its programs by working with other professionals and working with our Litigation and Research Departments to identify issues that may occur due to a lack of information.

The department will also work with our other departments to ensure that we do not duplicate resources are already exist and that we work closely with other programs to ensure that the mutual goal of service is met.

The department will conduct most of its activities through a strong corp of volunteers.  This will also help increase the number of trained and committed volunteers in Kentucky.

The department will pursue a dialogue within KYPLC, with other practitioners, and with our neighbors about the skills and resources every person needs to meet and sustain their most basic needs.

Most importantly, the department will develop its programs so that each activity pays respect to Kentucky's unique heritage and empowers all Kentuckians to pursue an amazing future full of possibilities.

Current Programs
Currently, the primary community education program is the Central Kentucky Economic Empowerment Project (“CKEEP”), which is a coalition that partners with the IRS to provide free tax preparation to low-income families, raise awareness about the Earned Income Tax Credit, and help families build assets.

Future Programs
KYPLC is developing a video series about how to manage your grocery budget so that you can create a thorough grocery list, plan a menu, and enjoy tasty and healthy meals with your family.  The series will be targeted to those who receive food stamps but we believe that anyone can benefit from the information.

KYPLC is also developing a Financial Coaching Program.
