Call for Nominations  

The Kentucky Poverty Law Center is seeking individuals to serve on its Board of Directors. 


Organization Information:
The Kentucky Poverty Law Center (“KYPLC”) is a new non-profit organization in Lexington, Kentucky.  The KYPLC was organized and will be operated exclusively for the provision of relief of the poor, the distressed, and the underprivileged; defending human and civil rights secured by law; and eliminating prejudice and discrimination.  The purpose of KYPLC is to identify and address the specific causes of poverty in rural and urban communities in the Commonwealth of Kentucky through advocacy, community education, and research.  Specifically, the KYPLC handles represents low-income litigants in complex, impact litigation, operates the Central Kentucky Economic Empowerment Project (CKEEP), and publishes the Kentucky Poverty Law Journal.  The KYPLC is composed of six (6) departments, with three (3) departments conducting activities related to program services and three (3) departments conducting activities related to supporting services.  The three (3) Program Services Departments are: the Litigation Department, the Community Education Department, and the Research Department.  The three (3) Supporting Services Departments are: the Development Department, the Operations Department, and the Finance Department.  

Position Summary:
The Board of Directors manages and controls the affairs and property of the KYPLC.  Directors must be at least 18 years old.  The KYPLC seeks individuals who also demonstrate a commitment to serving and improving their communities, and demonstrate expertise and professional experience from a variety of backgrounds, including, but not limited to, accounting, education, healthcare (including psychology), law, journalism, marketing, fundraising, political science, history, and sociology.  In addition to fulfilling the general requirements of individual directors, each director will sit on a committee that oversees, assists, and collaborates with a specific department within the KYPLC.

If you or someone you know are interested in serving on the KYPLC Board of Directors, please send a nomination letter to the KYPLC at the address below by November 30, 2009.  Nomination letters should include your name, title, mailing address, phone number, and email address (or of the person you are nominating), plus a brief statement explaining the reason why you are nominating yourself or another person to the KYPLC Board of Directors.
